Spring MTB Short Track Race #1, Eagle
The VRD’s Spring Short Track Bike Series gets riders ready for the upcoming bike series. No points or prizes… just a fun way to get in shape after a long winter. Races will take place on a short, dirt loop and racers have 20 minutes to ride as many laps as possible in that time. Youth races will be five and 10 minutes in length. First Friday Locals’ Appreciation Party, Silverthorne

Collegiate Peaks Trail Run, Buena Vista
Established in 1991, the race serves as a kick off celebration of Colorado trail running and provides a significant challenge of not only time but also physical and mental endurance.
Beginning and ending near the Arkansas River in Buena Vista, the course primarily follows single-track and jeep trails along part of the old historic Midland Railroad as well as through other scenic areas north and east of town. Encompassing great scenery and spectacular views, much of the course runs through lands managed by the National Forest Service and/or Bureau of Land Management. Depending on the distance you choose, 25-milers do the loop once (clockwise) and the 50-milers do it twice (the second time around, counter-clockwise). The course starts at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level and is an up-and-down course with over 3,500 feet in elevation gain/drop on each loop!

The four-day event will showcase several new features including AMERICAN FICTION (Opening Night Film and Winner of the 2024 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay), THELMA (starring Oscar® nominee June Squibb and the legendary Richard Roundtree in his final role), REMEMBERING GENE WILDER, and A HOME IN PARADISE from Colorado director Julie Jackson.

Sheep Camp Dog Trials, Hotchkiss
Since 2004 the Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials has brought Hotchkiss to life over Mother’s Day weekend.  Hotchkiss’ biggest annual event, the stock dog trials are a sport consisting of highly trained dogs (mostly border collies) paired with a human handler who, solely by voice, whistle and hand signals, guides the dog in herding a small band of sheep through a series of gates and finally into a pen.  This is a low key event and worth settling in to really get a feel for the skill involved. 
On the Saturday of the Dog Trials weekend, the Ute Trails Car Club puts on an impressive show of classic cars.  The event is held in Zack’s Park behind Zack’s BBQ.  Lunch is available and a free shuttle takes attendees between the car show and the dog trials.

Pints, Pools, and Paddles Craft Brew Fest, Pagosa Springs
For the second year in a row, Pints, Pools, and Paddles festival brings attendees the opportunity to help determine which brewery deserves recognition with the Favorite Brewery Award. Last year’s winner, Big Beaver Brewing Co. of Loveland, Colorado, will return to defend their title.
From 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday morning, Pints, Pools, and Paddles attendees are cordially invited to experience the 20 geothermal soaking pools! At 9:30 am, the Pagosa Paddle race begins. The whitewater race brings contestants through downtown Pagosa Springs and directly in front of The Springs Resort pools. On Saturday May 11, the San Juan River will have a surge of boaters competing for cash and prizes during the annual Pagosa Paddle whitewater races.   Not up for paddling? Come out to cheer on these athletes as they go through the downtown water features that make up the whitewater park on the San Juan River through downtown Pagosa Springs.   Spectators can watch the action from above at the Overlook viewing point, alongside the almost famous river walk or from the healing waters at The Springs Resort.  We are collaborating again with  The Springs Resort during their Pints, Pools and Paddles event. VRD Short Track Mountain Bike Races, Minturn
Back for the 14th year, the VRD’s Spring Short Track Bike Series gets riders ready for the upcoming bike series. No points or prizes… just a fun way to get in shape after a long winter. Races will take place on a short, dirt loop and racers have 20 minutes to ride as many laps as possible in that time. Kids races will be five and 10 minutes in length. The VRD’s three-race Spring MTB Short Track Series starts May 1st!  Are you ready to ride?

Dark Skies Paonia Film Festival, Paonia
Celebrating Dark Skies Paonia’s application to become certified as a Dark Sky Community. This is a fundraiser by donation featuring the locally filmed PBS special on Dark Skies Paonia. The 2023 Dynafit Vail Trail Running Series kicks off with the Dynafit Boneyard Boogie Trail Run, presented by Eagle Outside. This race takes runners on an 13K scamper through pinyon groves and juniper shrubs on some of Eagle’s most scenic single track!
The majority of the course takes place on single track with some double track sections and a short jaunt down a paved bike path, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,400 feet reaching a maximum elevation of 7,650 feet.
All abilities are welcome and racers do not have to be registered for the series to participate in individual races.

Samson’s Revenge Trail Race, Estes Park
Our race is a 10kish loop with 1,200ft of gain per loop with most of that packed into the Bible Point ascent.
Loops 2-6 for the longer races are a little shorter and are 100% on flowing single track trail.
Description
Samson was THE celebrity elk of the Rockies until he was illegally poached in 1995 at the YMCA.
Our race runs on Samson’s home turf, The YMCA of the Rockies, which his descendants still call home.
The course is fast single track with a big summit slapped in the middle.
This is Samson’s Revenge
All registrations include a $29 day pass to the YMCA of the Rockies grounds.
Bible Point KOM
All three races will have a separate KOM challenge for the fastest ascent of Bible Point.
The start and finish will be well marked. Prizes are one of a kind pieces made locally by Space Coyote Tattoo.

Backyard Ultra, Ouray
A Backyard Ultra. Complete an easy 4.167 mile course. If you finish in less than an hour—just a 14:24 pace per mile—you get to do it again at the top of the hour. The race continues hour after hour until there is only one person left. To secure the win, that person must successfully complete one more hour than anyone else. The race then ends.
For many runners, a backyard race is a good opportunity for setting a distance PR!
An easy out-and-back with only 140 feet of vert (1.3% average grade). The course includes about 0.50 mile on an asphalt running track, 0.75 mile on smooth dirt roads, and about 2.9 miles on the Uncompahgre River Walk (a gravel footpath broad enough for easy passing).
Although the course itself is easy, the altitude here is about 7700 feet above sea level. This may become a factor, especially when runners start getting tired! Temperatures in May are often cool, typically ranging from 38F to 63F with an average of six days of precipitation.

Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop is hosting a bike swap on Saturday, May 18th. Drop off your bike for sale on Friday, May 17th, between 4 and 6 pm. Only bikes less than 10 years old are eligible unless approved by a Sunlight Bike Tech. If you would like to tune your bike up before the sale, schedule that ASAP – we are getting busy and time/space is limited! Unsold bikes must be picked up by 6 pm on swap day or it will be donated to The Bike Project as soon as the next day. Sellers can opt for full proceeds as in-store credit or receive a 70% cash payout.
