New Worlds Competition – A Throwback to the Early 80’s

The New Worlds Competition is a Testament to Breckenridge Ski Resort’s 40 Years of Snowboarding History: April 17 – 19, 2026

In the early 1980s, snowboarding was a new and controversial sport, and most ski resorts across the country banned it due to concerns about safety and the unfamiliarity of the equipment.

However, in 1984, Breck recognized the growing popularity of snowboarding and decided to lift its ban on snowboarders, becoming the first major Colorado resort to welcome snowboarders. The following year, it hosts the first snowboard World Cup and has hosted major winter events every year since.

Breck hosted its first major event, the 1986 World Snowboarding Championships in March, known as “the Worlds.” Legendary filmmaker Greg Stump (“Maltese Flamingo”) stops by to catch early superstars like Shaun Palmer in the hand-dug halfpipe on Peak 9. This bold move helped to legitimize snowboarding as a mainstream winter sport and paved the way for other resorts to follow suit.

Breckenridge Ski Resort is celebrating this monumental milestone this April 17-19, 2026 with the New Worlds Competition! This year’s event is more than just a competition—it’s a prelude to the Winter Olympics, offering a preview of the world-class talent and testifying to Breck’s 40th history with snowboarders.

The resort is rapidly cementing its reputation as the go-to destination for high-energy vibes and top-tier athletes. Just recently, Breck hosted the first-ever Rockstar Energy Open, a three-day competition with dozens of talented local athletes and Olympic snowboarders. From gravity-defying tricks to the heart-pounding excitement of the park, Breck attracts a community of passionate riders who live for the thrill of the mountain. The 40th Anniversary event isn’t just a celebration of the past—it’s a testament to Breckenridge’s future as a launchpad for Olympic hopefuls and a magnet for the most talented, vibrant individuals in snow sports.

This is going to be cool. They have been hand digging a half pipe, old school style, to honor the roots of the sport. Don’t miss your chance to experience the action, the atmosphere and the history. Breckenridge Ski Resort is where champions are made, and the next chapter of snowboarding history begins.
