National Firefighters Hose Race, Steamboat
Professional firefighters from across the United States respond to a four-alarm ski race in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, as the Annual National Firefighters Ski Race rushes into town January 22-26, 2013. The highlight of the week is the fast-paced and often chaotic hose race, where firefighters, each wearing full turnout protective gear, ski down a slalom course linked together carrying a 50-foot length of 2-½ inch hose through the racecourse. Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships, Breckenridge
This will be the 23nd year of the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships. We hope you can join us as we welcome teams from around the country and world. We welcome visitors from beginning to the end of this free event (January 22 – February 3, 2013). Artists sculpt from Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. until Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., judging is at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013, the awards ceremony is at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2013 and sculptures will remain standing weather permitting until the night of Sunday, February 3, 2013. Please be aware that this is a snowy, high alpine environment. Dress warmly and appropriately with high traction shoes. IFSA Junior Freeskiing Regional Competition, Crested Butte Mountain Resort
The International Free Skiers Association was established in 1996 by freeskiing pioneer Shane McConkey. This year, IFSA has created the 2013 Junior Big Mountain Freeskiing and Snowboarding system. The two tier system comprised of regional events, national events, and one rotating North American Championship relies on the IFSA for sanctioning, insurance, protocol, and direction. Crested Butte Mountain Resort will host a Regional Event January 25 – 27 and the National Championships March 7 – 10, where 75-100 junior competitors from predominantly Colorado will compete in the famed Extreme Limits terrain. The US Forest Service and Loveland Ski Area team up to host Loveland’s first ever Ski with a Ranger Day! Join a Forest Service Snow Ranger for a fun, free, and easy run centered around the relationships between Loveland and the land we all enjoy so much. Topics include glacial geology, winter ecology, local history, and partnerships and are suited for all ages (recommended for ages 8+). Simply meet at Ptarmigan Roost Cabin at the top of Chair 2 at either 10:30am or 1:30pm for a run with the Snow Ranger (plan to get there 15 minutes early. The 2013 Crested Butte Ski Mountaineering Race sanctioned by the United States Ski Mountaineering Association. This ski mountaineering competition will require competitors to ski their way up, down, and across Crested Butte’s legendary Extreme Limits terrain. SPiN Vail returns this winter for its second year with a ping-pong tournament of epic proportions. Get in on the game, or just come to hang out and check out the action. Lei Weng, hailed in the press as “the exceptionally brilliant Chinese pianist,” will present a concert of music for solo piano. A virtuosic program of Chopin’s virtuosic Second Sonata, Claire de lune and the Bergamasque Suite by Debussy and Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata will be leavened with some of Mr. Weng’s favorite compositions for piano by Chinese composers. In addition to his international performance career, Mr. Weng is Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Colorado.
