USA’s Madi McKinstry repeats 3rd place finish at Telemark World Cup

Until this week, Madi McKinstry, of Steamboat Springs has not been among the top three women in the world. But this week brought the Telemark World Cup to her hometown of Steamboat Springs and she has shown that she can ski with the best. Monday and Tuesday were both Classic events at Mt. Werner, and Madi showed the world how to ski on her mountain. She finished in third place on both days.

Conditions were difficult with fresh snow on the course, snow falling during the race and limited visibility. Three of the women fell and did not finish the course. McKinstry’s training through the summer, fall and winter paid off, along with her local knowledge of a ski pitch that she has skied hundreds of times. “It feels awesome”, was McKinstry’s response when asked how it felt to have these two podium finishes. She was overwhelmed with her success these two days.

Zoe Taylor of Steamboat finished in 5th place in the women’s race. The USA’s top man was Steamboat’s Charlie Dresen with a tenth place finish followed by Jeffrey Gay in 11th place. Tommy Gogolen of Breckenridge was 15th and Birk Larsen of Park City, finished 16th today after a fall yesterday.

There are 9 women competing and 29 men from 8 countries. Yesterday the athletes had a training day, racing resumes at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs today.
