Breck Bike Week = Phenomenal Week
I bet we are all feeling a little groggy today! Was that one long 4th of July holiday or what? What ever you did, I am sure it was fabulous. I decided to spend the latter part of the week experiencing Breck Bike Week in Breckenridge and I will tell you it was an action packed four days.
The event actually kicked off with the Firecracker 50 on July 4th. Racers lead the holiday parade down Main Street in a race to complete two technical 25 mile laps on Breckenridge back-country single track. The town was packed and it was a blast seeing all the different age and ability levels take off with the crowds cheering them on.
On Thursday the center of town became Breck Bike Week Central. The Tour de France could be viewed daily along with coffee and other treats. A Bike Concierge Desk provided visitors with ride tips, event updates, information and maps. This was a huge resource. Trek, BH and Pivot provided everyone the opportunity to test drive their newest bikes. Town Trail tours, technical support, tech classes and more took place daily. Meta Yoga had some great FREE Yoga classes too.
I checked out the IMBA Benefit Movie Night: at the Riverwalk Center to see Mike Dion’s latest film, Reveal the Path. This ‘genre-defying adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover’ was terrific. A great group of folks gathered and some superior swag was won by all!
On Friday the Yeti Betty mountain bike skills workshop designed by women, took off and headed to the hills for a lesson on technical riding skills, bike maintenance and more. Tons of other events graced the day as well.
Saturday was big! The Carvers Poker Ride hit the dirt with an all-for-fun ride. There was a choice of a 10 or 20 mile marked course highlighting the best single track in town. Arrival at each of the designated checkpoints earned you one playing card. I can definitely say that my hand was not very good but the ride and scenery that went along with it was terrific. Super cool prizes, food and beer specials at the Kenosha Steakhouse wrapped up the day, needless to say, it was sweet!!! I did not make it to the Mav Sports Super D and definitely was bummed since I was told it was Awesome!
Sunday was filled again with events. Meta Yoga’s Yoga for Bikers brought mindful yoga geared towards cyclists. Then you could choose between the Summit Fat Tire Society Grand Fondo, a 25-35 mile off road mountain bike ride with plenty of climbing -OR- the Summit Velo Road Ride: a scenic, go-at-your-own-pace ride around Lake Dillon and back. I decided on the Velo ride. I road-bike often and really got a kick of riding in a pack. I learned a lot too! The Summit Velo team riders were super gracious teaching you signals, passing etiquette and the very best… learning to draft. Super thank you’s to Fred Newcomer and Sydney Fox of the Summit Velo Team.
Once we were back it was great relaxing in town square and checking out the RipStoke Trials Show. These guys were amazing pulling off some really cool bike skills finessing their bikes over obstacles around the Blue River and the Expo.
With the event over and looking back at it I can immediately say that the Breckenridge Resort Chamber, Town of Breckenridge and CBST Adventures did a spectacular job! Thanks to all for some great days out on your trails!
