Mountain Town Escapes – A Summer Getaway to Taos Ski Valley

Caren Austin takes us on a summertime escape to the Land of Enchantment with an elevated trip to Taos Ski Valley

For thirty-six hours I got the opportunity to fly to Taos New Mexico, and head up the Taos Ski Valley to explore, eat, and play.  Flying to Taos from Colorado is easier than you think.  JSX now flies out of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport with their “hop on service “.  You simply arrive thirty minutes before your flight, no TSA lines, free parking and you hop on.  In less than 1 hour, you arrive at the Taos airport and are whisked away by the ski resort shuttle for a quick twenty-five-minute scenic drive to your destination.  It’s so easy!  JSX is a small luxurious jet service and I’m so glad to have them flying to Taos!  Door to door from my house, which is 1 hour from the airport, put me in Taos Ski Valley in a total of two and a half hours.  Already a win.

I decided to stay at the stylish alpine hotel, The Blake at Taos Ski Valley.  My room was large and comfy and I had a beautiful view of the mountain.  I dined at 192 at The Blake for dinner, and as a passionate foodie, I was really impressed.  The pizza here is amazing and the steak was out of this world.  Local ingredients sourced from area ranches and farms are used in the preparation of the food here, and the love that goes into the dishes truly shows.

Summertime at Taos Ski Valley

Summertime is no joke in Taos, there are so many things to do.

For the adventurous there is the Via Ferrata which is a fun alpine excursion for climbers of all levels. Lacing through the Kachina Peak at 11,500 ft, your guided tour takes you along a network of preset routes of iron bars, so no experience necessary! You’ll be able to cross a 100 ft skybridge, and a double cable catwalk.

If mountain biking is your thing, Taos Ski Valley offers some of the most epic terrain in the country.  If you just want to chill and look at the scenery, you can take the lift to 11,000 ft as I did and gasp at the beauty that stands before you.  There is also plenty of hiking trails ranging from beginner to expert offered for the Summer.

Don’t miss The Bavarian restaurant on the base of lift 4 for authentic beers, Bavarian food and fun in the sun.  The pretzel with beer cheese sauce is delicious.

After a few hours of outside time, it was time to hit the spa at The Blake.  The spa is southwestern inspired and has a variety of treatments.  I opted for a massage and let the relaxation sink in along with the massage oil.  It was perfect.

New for Summer 2024 is The Blake Elevated Experience.  This 3-night immersive package is crafted as a personalized experience just for you or your family.  Hiking, fly fishing, Via Ferrata, and cultural offerings are just a few of the things they offer with this package.  The Blake plans everything for you, just arrive and the adventure is waiting without any worries. Most meals are included with this package as well.

It was time for my flight back to Colorado, and in a short thirty-eight minutes, I was on the ground.  I’m already planning my trip back to Taos next winter for some killer skiing!  I honestly have never met kinder people in all my travels.  They are proud of their independently run ski valley, and they should be because it looks just like a postcard.  Who knew that you could be in such a magical place quickly and hassle-free from the Denver area?   Plan your summer vacation to Taos Ski Valley for so much summertime fun in an enchanted New Mexico setting.  Summer activities go through mid-September so head out there and start exploring! Your plane will get you there in a snap!

Summertime in the mountains is simply stellar.  There are so many adventures I have yet to experience in our mountain towns but Taos was a highlight this season.  Hurry up and make a reservation. www.skitaos.com
