The Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) app puts data for 39,158 miles of trail and 1,431 trailheads in the hands of users
Prior to his departure Gov. John Hickenlooper announced the launch of a new state app with guidance to more than 39,000 miles of trails as nearly 550 tourism industry stakeholders gathered in Vail for their annual Colorado Governor’s Tourism Conference.
Embracing a theme of “COmmitted” in the town named the Most Sustainable Mountain Destination on earth, the Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) worked with Walking Mountains Science Center and Hotel Talisa to structure the event as the first zero-waste state tourism conference in the nation. Efforts ranged from conservation and reuse of materials to composting of food waste.
The Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) app puts data for over 39,158 miles of trail and 1,431 trailheads in the hands of users and is available for free download in the Apple and Google Play stores. A facet of the “Colorado the Beautiful” initiative, the COTREX app makes it easier than ever for Coloradans and visitors alike to access the state’s trailheads and open space.
COTREX puts information about all of Colorado’s trails in your hand’s thanks to a collaborative effort between 230+ Colorado trail managers.

- Customize the map based on your favorite activity.
- Show where it’s legal to hike, bike, ride your ATV, et cetera.
- Search through thousands of Colorado Trails, filtering by length, activity topic, region, and more. Tap along the trail to figure out the length and elevation profile of your next adventure.
- Record your journey, capture your path and take field notes along the way.
- Choose from thousands of classifications ranging from animal species to rocks and minerals.
- Download a map before you leave so you can navigate without cell service.
- You can even start following a friend and share your recent Outdoor Adventures on the app in the community section.
- Complete challenges and earn badges, explore and learn more about the beautiful state of Colorado in the process.
