Wish Lantern Festival – Silverthorne First Friday
Wish Lantern Festivals Celebrate Light in the Midst of the Winter Darkness
The Town of Silverthorne has crafted some exceptional First Friday Events and this is one you will not want to miss. This Friday, February 2nd, Silverthorne’s First Friday arts celebration will honor the diverse cultural influences of their community with a Wish Lantern Festival. Drawing inspiration from Mexico’s Noche de Candela and the Chinese Lunar New Year, February First Friday will honor cultural traditions as we welcome a new year. This educational cultural celebration will be held on Friday, Feb. 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Silverthorne Pavilion and Red Buffalo Coffee & Tea.
Noche de Candela represents the search for light between the winter solstice and the spring equinox across a variety of cultures. The search for light and wish lanterns represent the beginning sparks of spring and a way to welcome the new year with dance, rhythm, friends and light. In Lunar New Year celebrations, families place colorful lanterns outside their homes and launch them into the night sky. Each lantern corresponds to a particular wish the family has for the new year.
Wish Lanterns
Community members will be able to decorate wish lanterns at the Silverthorne Pavilion during First Friday. Wish lanterns will then be placed in the Blue River north of the Chipotle bridge and will be collected farther downstream by members of the Summit County Water Rescue team. Optimal viewing of the wish lanterns floating down the river will be on the bridge north of Chipotle, the Pavilion bridge, or along the Blue River Trail behind Sauce on the Blue and Red Buffalo Coffee & Tea. Lanterns will be released at 6:45 p.m.
Lunar New Year
Visitors to Red Buffalo Coffee & Tea during February First Friday will learn about the Lunar New Year, enjoy crafts from Frosted Flamingo and participate in story time with the Summit County Library.
Noche de Candela
To celebrate Noche de Candela, February First Friday attendees will enjoy salsa dancing and live music from salsa band Remezcla at the Silverthorne Pavilion. Food will be available from La Perla and the Pavilion bar will be open.
