PAUL WYLIE, FIGURE SKATING OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST, Welcomed Back by Winter Park Resort

We talk a lot, yes a lot about skiing and riding. But what about some of the other sports that require the long, cold winter.  At Winter Park Resort they are getting excited about Olympic Silver Medalist, Paul Wylie. They are welcoming him back to The Village at Winter Park Ice Skating Pond on Saturday, February 25 from 3pm to 5pm. The celebration will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Paul Wylie’s Olympic medal with figure skating performances, demonstrations, and hot chocolate in the Village Gazebo.

The event is free and open to the public. If guests wish to skate with Wylie, ice skate rentals are available for a small fee at Winter Park Resort Rentals, Village location.

Beginning at an early age, Wylie came to Winter Park Resort to ski with his family. He continues this winter tradition with his wife and three children by returning to Winter Park regularly. Because of his admiration for the Grand County community, Wylie volunteers his time for an afternoon to skate with residents and guests alike. Winter Park Resort extends their appreciation to Wylie and his family for making this event possible.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Wylie began skating at the age of three. At age eleven, his family moved to Denver, Colorado, where he began to train with Carlo Fassi. Wylie remained with Fassi for nine years, first in Denver and later in Colorado Springs where Fassi relocated to the Broadmoor Skating Club.

Wylie placed second at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1988, 1990, and 1992. He won the silver medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.

After the Olympics, Wylie became a professional figure skater. He won the 1992 U.S. Open Professional Championship and the 1993 World Professional Figure Skating Championships. Wylie toured with Stars on Ice from 1992 to 1998 before retiring. Wylie graduated from Harvard University in 1991 and then returned to attended Harvard Business School.

In 2004, Wylie returned to the ice for twenty two performances with Stars on Ice. Wylie has worked as a sports commentator/analyst, most recently for ESPN and Universal Sports. Wylie was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in January 2008.

Paul Wylie and his family currently live in Charlotte, North Carolina.
