EvoSwing Golf – The Sweet Spot Part Deux…The Long Clubs

As the clubs get longer, striking the ball on the sweet spot gets more challenging AND more important!   If your contact misses the sweet spot by half an inch, you can lose as much as 15 to 20% of your distance when you swing a driver!!

Length is one of the great magnifiers in golf.  Hit the ball on the sweet spot with a square club face and the extra speed of a long club can produce unmatched distance.  Miss the sweet spot and the extra time in the air magnifies just how crooked a golf ball can fly!

Fortunately, we have some help in our quest for striking the long club sweet spot.  The location of the sweet spot on the woods and hybrids is much more intuitive than it is on the irons.  Most woods and hybrids have the sweet spot smack dab in the middle of the face

With the irons it was absolutely critical that we created the correct shaft angle in order to strike the sweet spot.  With the woods and hybrids we have a bit of margin for error with regard to the angle of the shaft at impact.

The driver can be struck with a neutral shaft angle or a slightly rearward shaft angle (see pics 3 and 4).  Neutral will produce a lower launch angle with a bit more spin which is very good for accuracy.  Rearward will produce a higher launch angle and lower spin which promotes more carry and roll…distance!!

The hybrids can be struck with a neutral shaft angle or a slightly forward shaft angle (see pics 5 and 6).  When hitting a fairway wood or hybrid off a tee, strive for a neutral shaft angle.  This will optimize trajectory and carry distance.  When the ball is on the ground, a slightly forward shaft angle promotes increased spin to help the ball up and help it stop quicker as well.

Golf is full of opposites!  Sweet spot contact is no exception.  The shorter the club, the more important it is to get the shaft angle at impact perfect in order to find the sweet spot.  With the longer clubs, we are given a bit of forgiveness with the shaft angle but, we must make sure the face is square in order to reap the benefits of pure contact!
