WOW! It’s summer or at least meteorological summer. June 1st always marks the beginning of summer. It is used by weather scientists to align with whole months in order to track average temperatures and seasonal data. Astrological summer begins on the summer solstice (which falls on June 20, 2026), marking the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. I live at 9,980 feet and our aspens only have the tiniest leaves at this moment so I am living for the summer solstice.
I am so pleased to present the Summer issue of Mountain Town Magazine! This is another work of art crafted by our Art Director John Kernighan and myself. We are always pumped to bring together stories from local writers who are proud of their communities, its people and places.
We open this issue with a feature on Estes Park written by Elizabeth Courtney. She found her way to this spectacular town, highlighted by the magnificent Rocky Mountain National Park, many years ago. She shares her love for the community and the surrounding area which she had become intimately attached to (like most of us who live in a Colorado mountain town).
Our Mountain Dispatch Department covers news you can use from our communities followed by stories about makers, businesses and entrepreneurs. These pages lead to our feature story, written by Daniel Dunn, about an event about to make history, The Colorado 500 Charity Ride. This year they celebrate 50 years of gathering in some of the most beautiful towns and backcountry. Started in 1976 the group has grown and become a grand fundraiser for so many organizations and people. I am excited for you to read it.
We then delve into beautiful Homes, Realty, and Art followed by lip smacking food reviews. Caren Austin, who is also our Sales Director is a true foodie, and comes up with some fabulous story ideas for you to discover along with Lisa Blake and Shauna Farnell. Be prepared your going to be hungry after reading this section.
We have shopping and lodging suggestions along with road trip, event ides and our Calendar. Speaking of Road Trips, I learned something, if you are preparing to cross railroad tracks put your window down and listen. I had a close call on a road trip that I will never forget. Just wanted to share that tid bit.
Last but not least is our closing article, Last Lift. The image painted by Joseph McKay is a stunner and reminds me that we should all fall back in love with nature. She is what sustains us.
