Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel Alternating Tunnel Traffic Coming Up

Overnight alternating tunnel traffic coming up at I-70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels

Resurfacing project begins in mid-September between Clear Creek & Summit Counties.  The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contractor Brannan Sand and Gravel, LLC will resurface part of the Interstate 70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels (EJMT) starting Sunday night, September 14 through late October. The work will require overnight alternating tunnel traffic with up to 30 minutes of delay.

The project will remove the existing pavement on the right lanes of I-70 in both tunnels and replace it with new asphalt. This will remove the rutting, extend the asphalt’s lifespan improving the pavement condition, and provide a safer driving experience before winter hits. Work will also include restriping the lanes.

I-70 EJMT Travel Impacts

Overnight full bore closures in one direction of travel during the following times:

Sunday, Sept. 14 through end of September: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Sundays, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Mondays – Thursdays October 1 through end of October 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Sundays – Thursdays October 1 through end of October: Both directions of I-70 traffic will be held at the entrance of the tunnel for up to 30 minutes while one direction of travel at a time is escorted through the tunnel safely.

This closure schedule will remain in place until the project is complete, expected in mid to late October.

No overnight full bore closures will occur on Friday or Saturday nights.

Drivers are urged to obey the posted speed limit, leave plenty of following space, watch for crews and equipment and pay extra attention during this overnight work. The schedule could change depending on weather and other factors. Go to COtrip.org for the latest information on lane closures and road conditions.
