Breckenridge Rewind – A Film to Remember

Breckenridge Rewind is a Nostalgic Look at the Town’s Ski Culture, Characters, and Modern Roots

Take a trip back in time to Breckenridge in the 1980’s. Breckenridge Rewind, a one-night-only screening on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 7:30–9 p.m. at the Riverwalk Center. Presented in partnership by Breckenridge History and Breck Film as a part of the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA).

This special event is free to attend, but registration is required through the Breck Create website. Breckenridge Rewind is a curated one-hour reel of vintage footage captured by local filmmaker Lee Lucas and his production company, Lee Lucas Productions (ZLTV). For more than a decade, Lucas documented Breckenridge life on film — covering everything from major ski competitions and Ullr Fest parades to everyday moments and local personalities. Many of those featured in the footage still call Breckenridge home today.

Audiences will enjoy scenes of skateboarding down mountain passes, Figure 8 ski competitions, early mountain biking, Ullr Fest celebrations, speed skiing with CJ Mueller, vintage commercials from local businesses, the Fatty’s Golf Tournament, and nightlife at beloved haunts like Shamus O’Tooles Saloon. The result is a lively, authentic snapshot of Breckenridge from a different era.

Much of the original footage was salvaged from Lucas’s Florida home — rescued with the help of Robin Theobald — and digitized in Denver before being archived at the Breckenridge History Archives. Dedicated volunteers with Breck Film reviewed hours of this material to produce the one-hour retrospective to be shown at the premiere. Following the screening, Lee Lucas himself will take the stage with local legend CJ Mueller for a live talkback, reflecting on his filmmaking experience, what it was like to document Breckenridge in that era, and the significance of preserving this visual history.

Breckenridge Rewind celebrates not only the colorful spirit of the town’s more recent past but also the importance of local filmmaking, preserving the town’s social history, and community storytelling.
