AspectAvy
AspectAvy is an Exceptional New App for Avalanche Safety to Help You Not Die
AspectAvy is an exciting new App for Backcountry Skiers that launched in November 2023. 37 people lost their lives in avalanches in 2021 in the United States – The highest death rate in backcountry recreation history. AspectAvy wants to provide a tool that can be used alongside the proper avalanche safety training – a tool that simplifies the process and helps backcountry users understand and lower their risk of getting caught in an avalanche.
Here is How it Works: Addressing the Human Factor
We all have our blind spots. When ignored these blind spots can lead to tragic consequences in the backcountry. AspectAvy helps riders identify their blind spots by coaching them to avoid their biases, improve their planning, and execute processes that will effectively manage their risk. Using Data From Past Accidents AspectAvy leverages research on avalanches and avalanche accidents that’s been collected over several decades. With this data, the algorithm is able to screen out 90%of accidents. AspectAvy does the heavy lifting so you can focus on managing your group, the terrain and fun. AspectAvy chooses the slopes and angles that have the same risk level as everyday activities like driving.
Clear Recommendations: Statistics
Statistics on avalanches show a clear relationship between the stability of the snowpack and the slope angle at which avalanches occur. We use this information to provide recommendations that take the guesswork out of determining WHERE the safe slopes are.
The Technology: Adaptive Slope Shading
AspectAvy calls the tech Adaptive Slope Shading which consistently updates with the avalanche forecast and snow conditions to tell the user where the high and low-risk terrain is for the day. This is the FIRST preventative avalanche safety gear. AspectAvy’s goal is to save lives by keeping the user out of avalanche terrain altogether.
Here’s how AspectAvy is radically different from old-style mapping apps:
- Old style mapping apps use static slope shading – the slope shading never changes.
- It’s the same in June as it is in January…
- Are they saying the risk is the same every day?
- This technology is outdated.
- They don’t tell us the risk for today’s changing avalanche conditions.
- Using mapping apps with fixed slope shading for preventing avalanches is the wrong tool.
- It’s like using a weed whacker to shave.
