Sunlight Mountain Resort to Open Early for 2015/16

More than two feet of natural snow that fell in November has allowed Sunlight Mountain Resort to open early for its 49th season of skiing and snowboarding. Sunlight’s lifts will start turning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, one week ahead of its originally planned opening of Dec. 11. The ski area will be open through the weekend with nearly 300 skiable acres on an 18 inch base serviced by the Tercero and Segundo lifts.   In 1998 Guy Drew and his wife Ruth did what so many other couples would love to do, they left their corporate careers and bought a 155-acre property near Cortez to establish Guy Drew Vineyards and winery. While developing the land, the couple got an up-close look at the area’s heritage when they unearthed ruins from the ancient Pueblos that lived and farmed there about 1,000 years ago. The mineral-rich alluvial soils range from heavy clay loam to sandy loam. Vineyards at this elevation receive intense sun, meaning growing seasons are hot and dry with cooler nights. This is way too cute, officials at Sunlight Mountain Resort have named four-year-old Elijah Mattson of Glenwood Springs as the ski area’s first elected Mini-Mayor. The move comes after Mattson launched a spirited campaign on social media, earning him a free season pass. On Nov. 14, Matson took to Facebook and Twitter to soap-box for an early opening to the 2015-16 ski season. Aspen Mountain and Snowmass Opening Early

Aspen Mountain and Snowmass will open for daily operations Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015 continuing to open Colorado up for the ski and ride season. Aspen Mountain will now offer top-to-bottom skiing and Snowmass is slated to open 350 acres of terrain with both mountains offering more than 3,200 feet of vertical. The Town of Frisco and Summit Skimo Club are presenting an early winter instructional series to introduce folks to all things ski mountaineering (Skimo) racing. Briefly stated, ski mountaineering racing or Skimo is uphill/downhill ski racing. This instructional series starts on November 19 with a free introductory session and will continue on December 2, December 16 and January 27 at $15 each or $40 for the final three.
